Foot Reflexology
The feet are a master class in engineering science informs us that each foot has more than 7,200 nerve endings, 26 bones, 107 ligaments and 19 muscles which support, propel and balance the rest of the body. Nerve endings in the feet have extensive interconnections through the spinal cord and brain with all areas of the body. Almost one-fourth of all bones in the entire body are located in the feet.
Reflexology is a natural, holistic, restorative treatment focusing on treating the whole person and not individual symptoms. Working on the feet, lower legs, hands, ears and face.
The Origins of Reflexology - Ancient Egypt and Ancient Japan/China
Ancient Egypt. The earliest recorded example of what we know today as Reflexology was discovered in the early 6th dynasty around (c. 2500-2330 BC): These findings are recognised as the earliest visual evidence, which reflects a form of healing. It is a wall painting in an Egyptian tomb. The tomb of Ankhmahor (highest official after the King) at Saqquara and is know as the physicians tomb. It shows the physician holding the foot and applying massage to the sole of the foot and the hand. The translation reads: "Don't hurt me." The practitioner's reply: "I shall act so you praise me."
Ancient Japan/China. Reflexology dates back thousands of years. (c. 1000 BC)
In Japan Chinese Traditional Medicine and the ancient Buddhists incorporated firm and light pressure to the hands and feet for "Q" energy for balance and homeostasis.
Reflexology evolved in modern times around 1913 when an American ear, nose and throat surgeon Dr. William Fitzgerald began offering a form of treatment later to be termed Zone Therapy. Zone Therapy was further developed in the 1930's and refined as what we know today as reflexology by Eunice Ingham, a physiotherapist who decide to use Zone Therapy in her work with patients. In 1974, Eunice Ingham passed over to the next life at the age of 85. To protect her teachings as well as her original writings, her nephew Dwight Byers, a student of Eunice's formed the National Institute of Reflexology which is dedicated to teaching the Original Ingham Method throughout the World. Dwight Byers is the President of the International Institute of Reflexology and travels the world teaching Reflexology.
